Go /p/ro:
• Please post images that are JPG format and ideally smaller than 1 MB, and/or about 1000 pixels on the longest side.
• Expect to be judged harshly. Learn to deal with it.

Want:
• We come here for photos, so post yours as often as possible, even if "image unrelated" to your text.
• "Flickr/500px/Tumblr/Facebook/Portfolio" threads are for critique and networking.
• Use "Recent Photos" threads if you are shy or only want to post a couple of photos.
• Shared raw files which we can collectively edit for discussion of post-processing techniques, are encouraged.
• Use the Catalog to consolidate similar topics (photographic themes, images or technical gear threads).

Do not want:
• Go to /wsr/ or /r/ for specific Photoshop requests.
• Gear threads are discouraged, but identified as necessary. Many users simply hide these threads.

Anyone have experience with wide primes? I was looking at either the 20mm f2.8 or the newer 20 f1.8
I was previously using a 12-24 f4 but it got damaged so I wanted to try something else

There’s a 15 3.5 that’s pretty spectacular but you’re giving up a full stop and it’s pricier. I think 20 is the sweet spot in terms of being ultrawide but not looking too crazy. Otherwise there’s the excellent 14-24 f/2.8 holy trinity lens, but that’s a heckin chonker.
>>
>>4309300
Nice lens but yeah that thing is massive, plus attached to a giant FF body you got a brick
>>
There's a few modern-ish MF wide primes too, Irix 15 2.4, Rokinon 14 2.4, maybe some others. I don't have any myself though, besides a MF RMC Tokina 24 2.8.
There are also some good deals on 17-35 2.8-4 tamron (which is reasonably sized too), but I have no idea how good that is.
>>
The Nikon 17-35 is pretty nice I will say. Temper your expectations, it’s not as good as a 14-24 in the 17-24 range nor as good as the 24-70 from 24-35… but it’s a solid performer taken on its own merits. The 20-35, do not bother.

>negative film ages better than positive
>black and white better than color
>slow films better than fast
>storage conditions (dry/cool) matter more than years
>Negative film is shot 1 or 2 stops overexposed and then PULLED in development so that you build more density in the exposure and develop less such that the fog is limited
>slide/positive film is shot at box speed or overexposed and pulled.

I'm working with a Nikon D610. I'm trying to figure out if it's possible to take photos with the mirror up and electronic shutter. It's easy enough to get the mirror up, but it always wants to use the mechanical shutter. I want it to be silent and zero vibrations. I've searched around online and through the manual. Can't find anything. Anyone know if this is possible?

Also, enjoy an orange cat with his tongue out.

I wouldn't believe that bullshit even if it were taken with a reflex. Because what NASA shows and what they label it as matters a lot more.
AI in mirrorless is a concern because it can replace what people would see with an optical device.
NASA didn't need AI to fake the moon landing, just a studio and some actors willing to play the part.
>>
>>4306251
The evidence is overwhelming. The skepticism has been debunked so many times that you need to believe in AI live editing EVFs to keep up the denial.

Unlike the rest of this board, it seems the posters here enjoy photography.
You guys are alright.

You can't tell me one real pro of crop sensors. There's absolutely no point of APS-C when full frame exists. It's not as small, compact or economical as micro four thirds nor do you get the resolution and capability of FF. I guess it's just so that people can feel like they're larping as FF. FF is isn't even that much more expensive most of the time so being a poorfag is the only excuse

I'm a brainlet, why is m43 better / different that aps-c?

Because he's a gear collector and aps-c is just a touch too close to full frame, so he'd rather buy a much worse camera just to have more variety on his increasingly dusty photography shelf

To be frank, micro four thirds has no point unless you think shooting wildlife with a telephoto that functions and renders like someone stacked TCs on full frame sounds appealing, or intend to spend <$1k on your camera and multiple lenses.
>>
>>4305986
>I'm selling my m43 lens collection
same, I decided to sell everything and get an used a7riii + probably a 40mm 2.5
After trying a lot of things I realized that I don't really care about the versatility and having several lenses to be able to shoot anything, I find it more stimulating to make do with just one prime and at this point I might as well go for the higher quality so I can masturbate over the details

I just found out these can be really useful for more than just macro, which I found out that are great for getting a 1:1 ratio on your subject.

What I didn't know is something like a 105mm/2.8 also makes an outstanding portrait lens along with even an all-around good prime lens. Also typically it'll be cheaper than a similar fast lens.

Is this really the best type of lens for all pictures until you need some kind of zoom?

Why not? I’m stupid.
>>
>>4309622
You actually have the DOF of f2.8 at 1:1

It's the light transmission of f4.5
>>
>>4309623
So it doesn’t really matter then when using a tripod or additional lighting.
>>
>>4309483
Not quite. A macro lens has better control of distortion especially when you focus closer. Regular lenses are not optimized for that.
>>
>>4309622
Because the DoF will be so shallow as to be useless.

>>4309623
I don't, the aperture gets reduced to around f/5.6 at close focus.

Leicafags are an interesting species.
This is a thread to try and comprehend the minds of these consumerist retards.
Their subreddit, the premier place for Leica fans, has a rule explicitly stating that any photos need to "demonstrate a skill or technique that is incredibly difficult to execute correctly, has not been seen before, or both"
All the photos in the subreddit do not fit this idiotic criteria, yet are lauded.
99% of the posts there are about people buying gear instead of photos.
They care more about being seen with a Leica than actually using it.

There are 4 types of Leicamen

>1. "Affluent but clueless"
Utterly clueless but benign, just bought a leica because it is the most expensive and therefore the best, simple as. Likely uses a 1D to shoot his cat and a Noctilux to shoot action figures.

>2. "I just want a Leica, I JUST want a Leica"
They want a leica just because they want a leica and they will never be happy without a leica. Probably bought an MP/MA on finance or own an M8. Would probably make identical images with a Cosina CT-1.

>3. "It takes the best photos"
Are under the impression that leica cameras simply produce the best photos, end of. Most likely to be a retired dentist. 'Glow', 'Emotion', 'Build quality' etc. Thinks a 12-month CLA turnaround is "reasonable" for german "quality".

>4. "The Collector"
Just collects them like people collect watches. Probably does not even use them.
>>
>>4309503
>Thinks a 12-month CLA turnaround is "reasonable" for german "quality"

Definitely go eat in Queens. Astoria Seafood is sick, Jackson Heights has a bunch of great Indian and Nepalese joints, Flushing has the best Chinese food.

Downtown Brooklyn is kind of office-y, the Dumbo waterfront is bougie and gentrified af, but still kinda nice to wander through. I like Prospect Park and surrounding area quite a bit, there’s a good cheap pool hall on Flatbush, Oceans 8. Check out Red Hook maybe, cool area. Public Records and Nowadays are great for dancing, PR has the better sound system.

Thanks. Not big on the night scene. Or Eastern food. But I'll have to try the Chinese since this might be the only chance I have to get some decent stuff.
I'll be staying near Sunset park for the second half of my trip.
>>
how many fotos do you save, how and where?
>>
>>4309620
Oh if you like dim sum East Harbor Palace Seafood. Incredible. 8th Ave in Sunset Park is cool.

I save every photo I take. I use an OWC Thunderbay 4 with 4x16TB HDDs in a RAID 5 configuration. That is then backed up remotely with Backblaze.

What's the best camera for shooting photography like this?

I realize Todd Hido uses a couple different Leicas (which I cannot afford)

will Ricoh griii be good for this? I have a Nikon d70s and find it's hard to use.

Also. I think because the subject matter is so boring my cell phone can't really do it well enough.

Nice shots, they really 50mm? They look very tight.
>>
>>4309675
APSC sensor. 50mm lens appears more like 85mm.

Ah right

This board and its obsession with photographing the corner of buildings.
Buy a film camera, adds more soul.
>>
leica seems terrible for this application. get the biggest format you can afford + a tripod

the corner is the most interesting part of a building. would you rather they shoot the walls or roof?
